Dy.IGP inaugurates women police station in North Garo Hills
SHILLONG: With the aim to serve the people of the region effectively centering women and children, a much needed Women Police Station was inaugurated on Saturday at Mendipathar Police Station in North Garo Hills district.
Dy. IGP Western Range, Tura, Anurag Kumar inaugurated the Women Police Station amid the presence of Deputy Commissioner, S C Sadhu, Special Superintendent of Police (CID), Aditya Goenka and Superintendent of Police, North Garo Hills, Abraham T Sangma.
Dy. IGP, Anurag Kumar in his inauguration speech lauded SP Abraham Sangma for his endeavour in spearheading the initiative of creating a full-fledged Women Police Station in the district. He also thanked DC, S C Sadhu for supporting the call.
It may be mentioned that a notification for setting up women police station came on September, 2018 but due to lack of infrastructure the office had been functioning as women cell. The women police station after its inauguration became operational for the entire North Garo Hills district on Saturday which is being headed by SI, Balchi Marak.
The Dy. IGP impressed upon the Police officials to follow directives issued by the Supreme Court relating to crimes against women and children in letter and spirit. He also emphasised them to maintain professionalism in dealing with such crimes keeping in mind the sensitivity of the case.
Reiterating the need to integrate professional ethic along with usage of scientific aids during investigation he added that investigators should have in-depth knowledge of latest legal guidelines. He also advocated investigators to build synergy with the law officers so that the perpetrators of crimes are detected and punished to the maximum as permissible under law.
Deputy Commissioner, S C Sadhu in his speech said with the setting of the full fledged women police station reportage on women- children related crimes would be encouraged; pro-active measures and speedy redress of women-child issues are expected to be in place.
SP, Abraham Sangma highlighted the objective of women police station and said the office would register and deal exclusively with cases against women – children and POCSO cases and that the office would be manned by all Women Police Staff. He also alerted other Police Units to keep up with their responsibilities in ensuring women- child cases are tented to and forward actions are served.
