East Jaintia Hills issues prohibitory orders ahead of JHADC elections
Ahead of the upcoming Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) elections on February 21, the District Magistrate of East Jaintia Hills has issued strict orders to ensure peaceful, free and fair conduct of the elections.
All licensed firearm holders in the district have been directed to deposit their weapons, along with a copy of their licenses, at the nearest police station or outpost. These weapons will be returned after the election process concludes. However, the order exempts members of security forces performing lawful duties.
Carrying cash above Rs 50,000 or valuables like gold and silver without valid documentation has been prohibited. The district administration has also banned the erection of banners, posters, and wall writings on public property without prior permission. Additionally, political parties, candidates, and their agents are required to strictly adhere to the Model Code of Conduct.
The District Magistrate has warned that violators will face prosecution under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and other applicable laws. These orders, issued by District Magistrate S. Awasthi, take immediate effect and will remain in force until the elections are over. Anyone seeking exemptions may approach the competent authority for relief.
