East Khasi Hills crowned champions at 6th Meghalaya Games
The 6th edition of the Meghalaya Games concluded today at Kiang Nangbah Football Stadium in Jowai. The event celebrated sportsmanship and cultural richness, marking the end of a week-long competition involving over 3500 athletes across 29 sports.
East Khasi Hills emerged as the overall champion with 149 gold, 105 silver, and 127 bronze medals, totaling 381 medals. West Jaintia Hills secured the first runner-up position with 108 medals, followed by Ri-Bhoi with 104 medals.
Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, who attended as the Chief Guest, praised the organization and efforts of all involved. He said, “We’re proud to say we’re fit to host the National Games.” He added that the Sports Department has seen significant growth under the MDA government, with increased budget and infrastructure development. The construction of the Mawkhanu football stadium, set to be India’s largest, will make Meghalaya the soccer capital of India. Dhar also mentioned that the next Meghalaya Games are uncertain as the state prepares for the National Games in 2027.
The event also saw the participation of seven para-athletes, showcasing resilience and inclusivity. The ceremony featured the Meghalaya state anthem and appearances by the mascot ‘U Kiang,’ the Clouded Leopard, which added to the celebratory atmosphere.
Also present were MLA Wailadmiki Shylla, MSOA Working President John F. Kharshiing, and Deputy Commissioner of West Jaintia Hills District B.S Sohliya. John F. Kharshiing reflected on the journey of the Meghalaya Games, noting the introduction of para sports and the eligibility of medal winners for scholarships and cash prizes.
