ECI to resolve duplicate EPIC issue in three months

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced plans to address the long-standing issue of duplicate EPIC numbers within the next three months. The Commission, after discussions with technical teams and Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs), will implement a unique national EPIC number for affected voters and future electors.
India’s electoral rolls, with over 99 crore registered voters, undergo continuous updates, including an Annual Special Summary Revision (SSR). The recently concluded SSR 2025 saw final rolls published in January after a participatory process involving Booth Level Officers and political party representatives. The details of SSR 2025 as reported by CEOs are available at Annexure A.
ECI emphasized that duplicate EPIC numbers do not affect voting rights, as electors can only vote at their designated polling stations. The issue arose due to incorrect series allotment by some Electoral Registration Officers since 2000. The Commission is now taking steps to ensure database integrity across States and UTs. The final electoral rolls can be accessed here.
