EGH triple muder case: Assam’s Muslim student body demands judicial probe, submits memo to Conrad
In the backdrops of the recovery of charred bodies of three Assam youths in Meghalaya, the Muslim Students’ Union of Assam (MSUA) urged Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma to order for a judicial probe into the incident and to ensure security and safety of all labourers from Assam working in various installations of Meghalaya.
On April 17, three persons from Assam who had gone to East Garo Hills on a work-related trip were found to have been burnt alive in the car in which they were travelling in. Later their bodies were buried in a makeshift grave. Late the police recovered the charred bodies from the spot and registered a case in this connection.
In a memorandum to Sangma, the MSUA said three labourers from various parts of Assam were burnt alive and later their charred bodies were found inside a pit in a jungle near the link road in Rogu Alda village under Rongjeng police station on April 18.
Three labourers have been identified as Jumar Ali, Noor Muhammad and Zahidul Islam of Assam.
Another Arjun Ray (52) was also lynched by a mob. Ray hailed from Bihar and was engaged in construction work.
“It is very shocking that the non-tribal people are not safe in Meghalaya. We demand you to have a dialogue with Assam counterpart to ensure safety and security of the non-tribal people, especially the migrant labourers working in Meghalaya,” MSUA president Jalal Uddin said in the memorandum.
The student leader also urged the Mechala chief minister to conduct a judicial probe into the incident.
“The attacks on the migrant labourers have been a common scene in Meghalaya. Even as the Meghalaya police arrested few of them, it is very much important to bring all the miscreants to be booked without delay,” he added.
The MSUA also submitted a similar memorandum to Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma here on Monday.
Another Muslim minority organization, All Assam Minority Students Union (AAMSU) members of various groups of North Garo Hills and the Assam unit of Garo Student Union (GSU) to work on defusing the tension in the aftermath of the killing.
