East Khasi Hills district administration has issued show cause notice to leaders of the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) for alleged violation of the conditions for holding a rally on October 28.
The notice said the conditions imposed by the district administration in the permission order dated October 25 have been blatantly violated by the participants in the rally, which is contrary to the undertaking given by FKJGP general secretary Eldie N Lyngdoh.
“You are therefore directed to show cause as to why penal action should not be initiated against you for violating the conditions as laid down by the district administration in its order dated October 25,” it said.
The district administration also warned, “Your reply should reach the office of the undersigned on or before November 1, failing which the office of the undersigned will initiate legal action against you.”
Several people were injured and vehicles vandalised when a rally over unemployment turned violent on October 28.
The notice said during the course of the rally on October 28, the members participating in the rally indulged in acts of vandalism damaging vehicles belonging to general public.
Further, it was reported that the members also assaulted innocent civilians at Police Bazar, Malki and Dhankheti junction, wherein a few individuals have sustained injuries and had to be shifted to the nearest hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, different political leaders have demanded inquiry into the incident and action be taken against the culprits.
Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma had said that the violent protest was a warning to the NPP-led MDA government.
