Enforcement drive conducted near Dakshin Kamrup College to uphold tobacco-free zones
Guwahati, Dec 11: In a concerted effort to enforce tobacco-free zones around educational institutions, a comprehensive drive was conducted on Wednesday near Dakshin Kamrup College, Mirza, in Kamrup district.
The initiative was organized under Section 6B of the Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003, which strictly prohibits the sale of tobacco products within 100 yards of schools and colleges.
The drive was spearheaded by the District Tobacco Control Cell (DTCC) Kamrup, led by Dr. Arabinda Das, District Nodal Officer (DNO) of DTCC Kamrup, and Tanmi Hazarika, Divisional Coordinator of the National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP). The enforcement action was carried out in collaboration with Palasbari Police Station, Mirza.
Several violations of Section 6B of COTPA were identified during the operation. Penalties were imposed on vendors found selling tobacco products within the restricted area, reinforcing the commitment to creating a safer and healthier environment for students and the community.
Alongside enforcement measures, the team conducted awareness activities targeting students and the public. Educational materials were distributed to highlight the harmful effects of tobacco consumption and the importance of adhering to tobacco-free zone regulations. The initiative aimed to sensitize the community about the long-term health risks associated with tobacco use and the significance of protecting youth from its influence.
Authorities emphasized their dedication to maintaining regular surveillance and enforcement drives to uphold the law. These efforts are part of a broader strategy under the National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP) to mitigate the risks of tobacco exposure, particularly for vulnerable populations such as students.
This enforcement drive not only ensured compliance with the law but also served as a critical step toward fostering a tobacco-free environment around educational institutions, safeguarding public health and promoting awareness among the youth.
