Exporters wants Delhi to intervene over dilapidated conditions of NH connecting Bangladesh
The Meghalaya International Exporters Chamber of Commerce, Dawki has sought the immediate attention of the Central Govt over dilapidated condition of NH-40 and NH40 (E) from Shillong to Dawki-Tamabil Border in Meghalaya.
In an email to Nitin Gadkari Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, the MEICC said as you are aware that Dawki-Tamabil has been an international border with Bangladesh since Independence while Bangladesh was then known as East Pakistan.
They informed the NH-40 also existed during the British Rule connecting Shillong and Sylhet via Dawki and till today this connection exists.
The letter said previously the road was a one way system and only a few years back it was converted into a double lane and “we are eternally grateful to the Govt of India for doing so.”
As of now, the MEICC have no other option but to write to Delhi as the condition of the present NH-40 has been dilapidated to a great extent and very inconvenient to the public who have to travel to and fro via this road since the past few months after the company which was alloted with a contract for construction of 4-lane from Shillong-Dawki-Tamabil Border have stopped work for reasons best known to them.
As of late, the condition of the road keeps on getting worse due to heavy incessant rainfall in the area, they added.
The letter pointed that Dawki-Tamabil Border is an export road with Bangladesh and huge volumes of trade is taking place.
This road not only fetches revenue to the State Govt through export of state minerals but also brings foreign exchange to the Central Govt.
The road is also being used by foreign and domestic tourist for visiting famous tourist spots like Mawlynnong which is the Asia’s cleanest village and Umngot River which is well known about its crystal clear water in India.
But in spite of all its importance sadly attention is not being given by the authorities concerned to its condition.
The condition of the NH-40 (E) is also in a very bad shape and requires immediate attention.
