Farm women in Meghalaya trained in mushroom cultivation
The Multi-Technology Testing Centre and Vocational Training Centre, College of Community Science, Central Agricultural University-Imphal, Tura, Meghalaya, organized a five-day Skill Development Training Program on “Mushroom Cultivation for Income Generation of Farm Women” from December 2nd to 6th, 2024, at the college campus.
The program aimed to enhance family income through low-cost investments, promote self-employment, and address nutritional concerns within the community. It also focused on utilizing agricultural residues, such as paddy straw, for mushroom cultivation, contributing to environmental sustainability. By adopting mushroom cultivation, farmers can effectively use farm residues to generate additional income and improve their socio-economic status.
The training was attended by 15 women and school dropouts from Sangsangre village, Gambegre Block, West Garo Hills, Meghalaya.
The valedictory function was chaired by Dr. Jyoti V. Vastrad, Dean of CCS, Tura, who emphasized the economic potential of mushroom value addition. She noted that if demand for mushrooms increases, further processing and value addition could be integrated to meet the growing market needs in Meghalaya.
The program was coordinated by Dr. Rajkumari Padamini (Assistant Professor, Plant Protection), with support from Dr. Rocky Thokchom (Assistant Professor), Archan Rabha (Horticulture Assistant), and Cassandra H. Ch. Marak (Farm Assistant).
