Farmers taught how to manage citrus orchards and black pepper in South West Khasi Hills
With an objective of boosting production of black pepper and orange in South West Khasi Hills District, a training and interaction sessions on Management of citrus orchards and black pepper’ in Manad, South West Khasi Hills, Meghalaya was conducted on February 10.
The programme was organized by the Life Care Foundation, Mawlangwir in collaboration with ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam and Hill Farmers Union, Manad Unit.
Horticultural crops have been an importance aspect of living in the hills. In the terrains of Mawkyrwat southern slopes lies several villages such as Manad, Pyndengsohlang, Mawbidong, Pyndensohlang and Pynden Lyngdoh whose livelihood entirely depends on horticultural crops such as fruits, plantation and spice crops.
Dr. Heiplanmi Rymbai, Scientist, ICAR-NEH, Umiam and a coordinator of the programme thoroughly demonstrated suitable technologies for production of citrus and black pepper.
About 57 farmers attended the programme from five villages Manad, Pyndengsohlang, Mawbidong, Pyndensohlang and Pynden Lyngdoh of South West Khasi Hills, Meghalaya. During the interactive session, farmers raised several issues for discussion including citrus trunk borer, fruit drop and other management practices.
A foot sprayers pump of 5 numbers was distributed to the farming community for timely intervention in the management of citrus fruits, black pepper and other horticultural crops. HB Lyngdoh the Myntri Shnong expressed his gratitude to the Director of ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam for his unwavering support towards farming community of the areas.
