First IIM in Assam gets Centre’s in-principal approval, site selected at Marabhita
The Central government has given its in-principal approval for the establishment of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Guwahati, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said here on Sunday.
IIM Ahmedabad will be the mentor for the new IIM to be set up at Marabhita near Guwahati in Kamrup district
In a post on X, Sarma said: “Sharing a big news! Following our request in 2023, Hon PM Shri @narendramodi ji has given a special gift to the people of Assam by approving an Indian Institute of Management near Guwahati, making it among the few cities to house an IIT, AIIMS, Nat’l Law Univ & now IIM”
“This will be a game changer for Assam, making the State an education hub in Eastern India and also help fulfil our economic aspirations,” Sarma said in a separate post.
“I envisage these premiere institutes to collaborate among themselves and industry to unleash the power of multidisciplinary education,” Sarma also said.
“As evident from the letters, the swift transformation from idea to execution illustrates the power of a Double Engine government. My gratitude to Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji and Hon’ble Education Minister Shri @dpradhanbjp Ji for their cooperation,” he added.
The Site Selection Committee, under the chairpersonship of Prof VK Paul Professor, School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi finalised 574 bighas 1 katha 12 lecha of land situated in the Marabhita area near Guwahati in Kamrup district for the establishment of IIM, PK Banerjee, joint secretary, Ministry of Education, said.
The IIM Ahmedabad has been requested to take further initiatives for the preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the IIM Kamrup in consultation with the secretary higher education department, and the Assam government and submit the DPR to the Ministry for further action the proposal.
