First painless childbirth conducted at Woodland WK Hospital in West Jaintia Hills
Woodland WK Hospital has successfully conducted the first painless childbirth in West Jaintia Hills District, marking a significant step forward in maternal healthcare in the region. The birth took place on March 17, 2025, when a healthy baby girl was delivered through normal delivery with the aid of epidural analgesia — a technique that reduces labour pain without affecting the mother’s ability to remain alert and active during delivery.
According to Dr Peter Daniel Khariong Medical Superintendent Woodland WK Hospital, this is the first time the technique has been used in the district, and it will now be offered as a regular service for eligible mothers.

Epidural analgesia involves placing a small catheter in the mother’s lower back through which pain-relief medication is administered. The method, widely used in developed countries, allows women to go through childbirth with significantly reduced pain while maintaining full awareness.
“This is not just a medical achievement — it is a deeply meaningful step forward for the mothers of our district,” said Dr. Lawiki E Shullai, Obstetrician In-Charge. “For generations, women have silently borne the pain of childbirth without any available relief. Today, we are able to offer them a safe, scientifically proven alternative that lets them participate in the birthing process with strength and dignity.”
Dr. Aiar D Sangma, Anaesthetist at the hospital, noted that labour analgesia, particularly epidural analgesia, has been in use since the early 20th century and continues to be improved upon for safer and more effective outcomes.
“Modern medicine believes that painless childbirth is a basic right for every woman. Epidural analgesia has been shown to be safe for both mother and baby, and we are proud to make this option available in our district,” he said.
The hospital’s Obstetrics and Gynaecology team includes Dr. Merciful Shylla, Dr. Wilanika Bamon, and Dr. Lawiki E Shullai (Visiting Consultant). The Anaesthesia team comprises Dr. Aiar D Sangma and Dr. Dipankar Hazarika.
Woodland WK Hospital stated that not all mothers may be eligible for the epidural technique, as its use depends on the individual’s medical condition. However, for those deemed suitable, the method offers a safe and comfortable birthing experience.
The hospital has encouraged expectant mothers and their families to reach out for counselling and further information about the availability of painless delivery services.
