Five critically ill after eating wild mushrooms in Ri Bhoi
Five members of one family were critically ill after allegedly consuming wild mushrooms.
The incident took place on June 2 in Nongkyndang of Saiden village, Ri Bhoi District.
They were admitted to Nongpoh Civil Hospital and Bethany Outreach Hospital. Two of them were in serious condition and received medical treatment at Bethany Hospital.
They are identified as Larita Syiemlieh (mother), Wanphrangsngi Syiemlieh (23), Daniki Syiemlieh (16), Larikynti Syiemlieh (14) and Da-u-Rijied Syiemlieh (3).
According to the siblings, the family had dinner on the evening of June 2, consuming wild mushrooms brought from a jungle in Umran village, Ri Bhoi District. They said that one by one, they began showing signs and symptoms of illness, including vomiting and flu-like symptoms. By around 10 to 11 p.m., their condition worsened, and they were taken to Nongpoh Civil Hospital, with some in serious condition receiving further treatment at Bethany Hospital.
It may be mentioned that a similar incident involving the consumption of wild mushrooms was reported from Saphai Village in West Jaintia Hills District, Meghalaya, where four people, including three minors, succumbed to their illness after consuming wild and poisonous mushrooms.
