Flood situation improves in Assam, 1.37 lakh still reeling under flood in 11 districts
The flood situation improved in Assam on Wednesday with the water level of the Brahmaputra and all its tributaries is going down even as more than 1.37 lakh people of 11 districts are still reeling under floodwater.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), more than 1,37,842 people from 487 villages under 21 revenue circles in 11 districts are suffering due to the deluge.
The affected districts are- Kamrup, Hailakandi, Golaghat, Lakhimpur, Karimganj, Darrang, Dhemaji, Barpeta, Nagaon, Cachar and Goalpara.
Even as the water level of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries is reducing, the Kushiyara River is still flowing above the danger level mark in Karimganj.
Cachar is the worst affected district followed by Karimganj and Darrang districts.
In Cachar, 74,870 people from 63 villages under Katigorah revenue circles were affected.
In Karimganj district, 56,665 people from 140 villages under Karimganj, Nilambazar, RK Nagar, Badarpur and Patherkandi revenue circles were affected by the deluge.
Embankments, roads, bridges and other infrastructure have been damaged by floodwater in Darrang, Kamrup and Bajali.
The authorities are running 83 relief camps and 26 relief distribution centres for the affected people across the state.
10,049 people are staying in the relief camps while 27,750 people are getting food and other relief materials from the relief distribution centres.
1,24,872 domestic animals were also affected by the deluge. The authorities provided 981.36 quintals of wheat bran and 280 quintals of rice bran for affected cattle.
523.72 quintals of rice, 98.64 quintals of dal, 29.64 quintals of salt and 2963.39 litres of mustard oil were distributed among the affected people.
State water resource minister Pijush Hazarika on Tuesday held two meetings in Janata Bhawan with the chief engineer of the water resources department and other engineers in the presence of Professor Rajiv Bhattacharya of IIT Guwahati and Professor Bibhash Sharma of Assam College of Engineering to review the overall flood situation across the state and measures to be taken up for control of the floods.
