Flood situation turns grim in Assam; one more dies, 1.98 lakh affected
Flood situation turned grim in Assam with the South West Monsoon advancing towards Assam and Northeast on Thursday, according to an official report of Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
One more person died ay Lala in Hailakandi district on Tuesday taking the toll to 3 in the first wave of the deluge.
Altogether 1,98,856 people of 386 villages under 22 revenue circles in 9 districts of the state were affected in the deluge, the ASDMA said.
The affected districts are- Hailakandi, Hojai, Golaghat, Nagaon, Karimganj, Cachar, Karbi Anglong West, Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao.
3,238.8 hectares of cropland were damaged due to the flood, the ASDMA report stated.
10 relief camps and 15 relief distribution centres have been opened in the affected districts for the affected people. A total of 35,640 inmates, Including 10 pregnant women and 4,220 children are taking shelter in these camps.
Cachar is the worst affected district with 1,02,246 population being affected in 150 villages under 5 revenue circles.
In Karimganj district, 36,959 people from 100 villages under 5 revenue circles were affected.
In Nagaon district, 22,354 people from 37 villages under 2 revenue circles were affected.
Floods also damaged important infrastructures, including public roads and embankments in many places of the affected districts.
In Nilambazar Revenue Circle of Karimgaanaj district, the embankment of the Longai River breached at Chengjuripar, damaging properties at the nearby villages.
Additionally, breaches in the Longai River embankments at South Bilbari, two locations in Kochubari, and Muradpur in Patharkandi Revenue Circle have caused widespread flooding.
Assam water resources minister and guardian minister Pijush Hazarika visited the affected areas on Thursday and assured all necessary assistance to the flood victims.
Hazarika also assured that the breached points in the affected embankments would be repaired within the next 15 days using Geo Mega Tube technology to mitigate flood issues during the upcoming monsoon season. He directed the departmental officials to undertake these repair measures immediately.
So far, the current flood has affected 26 villages in Ramkrishna Nagar Revenue Circle, 19 in Nilambazar, 38 in Patharkandi, 6 in Badarpur, and 11 in Karimganj.
According to the DDMA, the flood has affected 176,723 livestock in the district.
