Focus on Gender Equality: 10-Day Campaign launched at Northeast Adventist University
The District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), West Jaintia Hills, under the District Social Welfare Officer, WJH, inaugurated a 10-day campaign celebrating the International Day of the Girl Child on October 3, at Northeast Adventist University, Khliehtyrshi.
The event was chaired by S. Meliora Lamare, Gender Specialist, DHEW, WJH. Waildamiki Shylla, Local MLA and Chairman of MUDA, was the chief guest. Other notable attendees included Dr. H. Niang, Block Development Officer, Thadlaskein; Y. Najiar, District Social Welfare Officer, WJH; I. Kharpran, Officer-in-Charge, Women’s Police Station, Jowai; and Dr. Paul Bhaggien, Vice Chancellor, Northeast Adventist University.
In his speech, Shylla emphasized the ongoing need to promote gender equality in education, healthcare, and leadership opportunities for girls. He acknowledged the significant role women play in the matrilineal society while pointing out challenges like maternal deaths due to traditional childbirth practices. Shylla also addressed the rise in crimes such as rape and murder, attributing them to the misuse of technology and social media. He highlighted the increasing participation of girls and women in sports and other fields, both nationally and internationally, breaking stereotypes. Citing the Women’s Reservation Bill, he encouraged young women to participate in politics to drive change and development.
Dr. Niang spoke on the importance of empowering women, with a focus on physical and mental health. He emphasized the role of educated women in contributing to the economy and society, highlighting how women’s leadership fosters stability and overall well-being within families and communities. He also noted that empowered women become key contributors to economic growth, particularly through women-led businesses and community development.
I. Kharpran, Officer-in-Charge of the Women’s Police Station in Jowai, led a session on crimes against women and children, covering topics like domestic violence, sexual harassment, human trafficking, cybercrime, and legal protections for women. She outlined laws such as the Domestic Violence Act, POCSO Act, and provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Act, offering tips on online safety.
Y. Najiar, in her introductory remarks, highlighted key initiatives under Mission Shakti for women’s safety and empowerment. She outlined efforts under the Sambal and Samarthya schemes, including One Stop Centers, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Women Helpline, and Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana, which support women facing violence and offer maternity benefits.
The event began with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, followed by a welcome address from Dr. Paul Bhaggien.
