Former Assembly Speaker donates 50% salary to combat against COVID-19
Former Assembly Speaker and Congress legislator from Nongthymmai Charles Pynrope has donated 50 percent of his monthly salary to the state government for effectively tackling of the COVID-19 situation in the state.
In his letter to the Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh on Wednesday, Pynrope said that it is his wish that 50 per cent of his monthly salary be deducted and place at the disposal of the government.
“At this juncture, you are aware that the efforts our government is putting in place will need all the necessary help and assistance to deal with the present situation we have all been experiencing.
In this light it is my wish that your esteemed office be instructed to deduct 50% of my monthly salary to place at the disposal of the government,” the former Speaker said in the letter.
Pyngrope also said this deduction may take effect from April 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021.
In the recent concluded Assembly’s reassembled budget session, the legislator had also suggested 50 percent salary cut from all 60 MLAs to help the government in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. According to him, only Rs 6,000 was deducted from the salary of MLAs at present.
