From struggle to success: East Jaintia Hills marks ULLAS milestone with 7731 learners

The journey from struggle to success became a reality for 7731 adult learners in East Jaintia Hills, as they cleared their literacy assessments under the ULLAS (Understanding of Lifelong Learning for All in Society) program. The ULLAS Mela 2025, held on April 24 at Khliehriat West Community Hall, celebrated this remarkable achievement, reaffirming the power of education in transforming lives.
Organized by the District School Education Officer (DSEO), the event highlighted the program’s role in empowering individuals aged 15 and above who missed formal schooling, providing them with the tools to integrate into society and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
Additional Deputy Commissioner JU Kharpuri, addressing the gathering, emphasized the importance of education in enabling individuals to make informed decisions, manage businesses effectively, and identify malpractices. She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring accessible education and urged communities to encourage more participation in ULLAS.
Highlighting the role of literacy in economic empowerment, Kharpuri stressed the need for accounting and digital literacy to help adult citizens navigate modern challenges. She called upon Block Development Officers to actively promote ULLAS and ensure broader engagement.
District School Education Officer AP Syiem celebrated the success of 7731 learners who have cleared assessments, praising their determination and enthusiasm in embracing education. She noted that ULLAS will continue until 2027, targeting 12000 enrollees in East Jaintia Hills District and expanding the program’s reach.

Commending the relentless efforts behind ULLAS, Syiem applauded Special Educator and District Nodal Officer Salanbor Kamar, whose dedication has been instrumental in shaping the program’s success. His leadership has significantly contributed to the rising literacy rates, proving the effectiveness of community-driven education initiatives.
State Literacy Mission Authority (SCL-SLMA) Consultant Barikor Syiem provided insights into the broader goals of ULLAS, emphasizing its role in fostering lifelong learning and inclusivity.
The event also featured cultural performances, with songs by students of Oxford Secondary School, Lad-Rymbai, and ULLAS learners from Samasi Village, adding vibrancy to the celebration. Certificates were awarded to learners who had successfully completed assessments, marking their progress toward literacy and personal development.

With 7731 learners already making strides toward education, the ULLAS Mela 2025 reaffirmed its mission of empowering individuals through literacy, demonstrating that lifelong learning is key to sustainable community progress.
