German Ambassador meets Assam Governor; discusses investment and tourism opportunities
German Ambassador to India, Dr. Philipp Ackermann, met with Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at Raj Bhavan, Guwahati, on Wednesday to discuss a range of issues, including Assam’s investment potential, heritage tourism, and academic collaborations between India and Germany.
Acharya emphasized the long-standing bilateral ties between India and Germany, highlighting Assam’s strategic geopolitical location and its proximity to Southeast Asian nations. He stressed that Assam could play a pivotal role in strengthening economic and diplomatic relations between India and Germany.

During the discussion, the Governor referenced the existing partnership between IIT Kharagpur and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) through the German India Academic Network for Tomorrow (GIANT). He advocated for a similar collaboration between Germany and IIT Guwahati to enhance academic exchanges, promote research initiatives, and foster stronger educational ties between the two regions.
Highlighting the recent Advantage Assam 2.0 summit held in Guwahati, Governor Acharya noted the overwhelming participation of over 45,000 delegates, including foreign dignitaries. The summit witnessed the signing of more than 300 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), with proposed investments exceeding Rs 5 lakh crore. The Governor attributed this success to the increasing confidence of global investors in Assam’s economic potential, reinforcing the state’s role as the economic hub of the Northeast and a gateway to Southeast Asia.
Governor Acharya also underscored Assam’s vast tourism potential, particularly in the domains of heritage, spiritual, and wildlife tourism. He highlighted the state’s three UNESCO World Heritage Sites and its sprawling tea gardens, which have the potential to attract international tourists. He encouraged the German envoy to explore these opportunities, fostering cultural exchange and boosting Assam’s tourism sector to bring mutual benefits for both Assam and Germany.

Dr. Philipp Ackermann was accompanied by Consul General Barbara Voss during his visit. The meeting set the stage for stronger Indo-German partnerships in trade, tourism, education, and investment, further cementing Assam’s position as a key player in international economic and cultural collaborations.
