Global experts unite at Kaziranga: Elephants get VIP medical treatment in international health camp
Kaziranga National Park recently hosted the International Elephant Health Care Workshop, a two-day event (February 27–28) that brought together leading experts in veterinary science, conservation, and wildlife care from around the world.
Organized by Wildlife SOS in collaboration with the Assam Forest Department, the workshop saw the participation of 28 veterinarians, who engaged in hands-on training sessions focused on elephant health, disease management, and advanced medical procedures.
The health camp featured globally renowned experts, including Dr. Susan K. Mikota (USA), Dr. Willem Schaftenaar (Netherlands), Dr. N S Manoharan (India), and Dr. Bhaskar Choudhury (India). These specialists led intensive treatment sessions covering pain management, wound care, gastrointestinal issues, and foot care, among other critical aspects of elephant healthcare.

As an extension of the workshop, practical training was conducted in Kaziranga National Park, where veterinarians examined and treated both government-owned and privately-owned elephants. This hands-on approach allowed participants to implement advanced diagnostic and treatment techniques, ensuring improved elephant welfare while strengthening conservation efforts.

Following the Kaziranga camp, participants moved to Merapani Reserve Forest in Golaghat Forest Division for further training. The workshop will conclude on March 6 at Manas National Park, reinforcing the long-term commitment to elephant healthcare and conservation across Assam.
