Govt approves ordinance to enable tax payers to clear pending dues
The state government on Monday decided to extend the time for payment of pending liabilities by tax payers.
The decision was made by the Cabinet which approved the proposal to amend the Meghalaya Settlement of Arrears under the State Taxation Act Amendment Ordinance, 2022.
Informing this, Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui told reporters that the state government has implemented the one time settlement of tax.
“(However), in the course of time, there are some persons, firms, agencies who have already paid some percentage of the tax but they could not clear all. There are some firms which have already submitted the application as they could not pay because the last date for settlement is over,” he said.
“Therefore, the taxation department have proposed to give (time) only to those who have submitted the application and (have expressed) willingness, so the cabinet has approved this ordinance to enable those dealers, traders or persons who have liabilities, to settle their tax,” he added.
With this, the minister said the government will be able to generate Rs 12 crore for pending cases which lies with the taxation department.
When asked, Rymbui informed that around 26 have fully paid their dues.
