Govt awaits sanction from Centre for construction of road along Indo-Bangla border: Tynsong
Deputy Chief Minister in-charge PWD (Roads) Prestone Tynsong said the state government is waiting for the Centre to sanction funds for construction of the Rymbai-Bataw-Borkhat-Sonapur road connecting the villages along the Indo-Bangla border in East Jaintia Hills.
“We have already submitted the detailed project report (DPR) to the DoNER Ministry for construction of the road, which is about 60 kilometers, at an estimated cost of over Rs 100 crore,” Tynsong told reporters on Wednesday.
His statement also came a day after four villages – Hingaria, Huroi, Lahalein and Lejri – having a population of more than 5,000, have demanded both the Centre and state government to allow them to be part of Bangladesh.
The demand was made as a mark of protest against the government’s apathy to construct the road despite repeated requests in the past many years.
Asked, Tynsong however said the delay was because there were few queries from the ministry. “But more or less the project is in the process of being finalized and we hope very soon we will get the sanction from the Centre,” he informed.
Stating that the government is aware of the plight faced by the border residents due to the pathetic and deplorable condition of the road, he said, “In fact, I had also visited the area and have seen the problems faced by them.”
Tynsong however said it is wrong on the part of the four villages to say that they want to be part of Bangladesh since the government is not sleeping over the issue.
“Although we could not visit Delhi due to COVID-19 situation, we have taken up the issue with the Centre through video conferencing to ensure that we get the sanction so that we can immediately float the tender for starting the construction of the road. Therefore, I appeal and assure them that we are very serious and we are trying our best to get the fund released at the earliest,” he said.
