Govt directs CS to complete identifying of places for hawkers, street vendors
The state government has directed the chief secretary, MS Rao to immediately complete the process of identifying designated places for accommodating the hawkers and street vendors at the earliest.
Addressing media persons on Thursday, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong informed that the issue related to the street vendors and hawkers was discussed at the review meeting.
“The chief secretary has been asked to complete the process of identifying designated places to allow street vendors and hawkers to resume their livelihood activities,” he said.
Tynsong said the government will accordingly take a decision on the matter based on the report, which will be soon submitted by the chief secretary.
Earlier, the Meghalaya & Greater Shillong Progressive Hawkers and Street Vendors Association, Workers’ Power and Thma U Rangli Juki (TUR) had requested the government’s intervention into problems faced by the hawkers and street vendors due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Asked, the deputy chief minister said that over 400 hawkers and street vendors have so far registered with the government. “Only registered hawkers and street vendors will be allowed to carry out their livelihood activities in the proposed designated places,” he added.
Meanwhile, Tynsong informed that the state government has also directed the respective deputy commissioners to examine the proposal for reopening of yoga centres and gyms in the state.
