Govt has identified 21 types of disability
Mihmyntdu Community Social Welfare Association (MCSWA) Targeted Intervention (TI) on Injecting Drug User (IDU) under Meghalaya AIDS control Society organised an Awareness Program on Prevention of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse in West Jaintia Hills on May 17 in collaboration with District Social Welfare Officer at Thomas Jones Synod College, Jowai.
The Program was chaired by S.Meliora Lamare, Program Manager of MCSWA TI –IDU Jowai.
District Social Welfare Officer, West Jaintia Hills District Jacqueline Synnah expresses her gratitude towards the NGO for their effort to organised certain programs such as this, in different areas of the district both rural and urban by making the masses especially the youth which are the future of the society and country as a whole understand the ill- effects and consequences of substance abuse.
Furthermore, she highlighted on various schemes that one can apply includes Child Welfare Scheme, Women’s Welfare Scheme and Scheme for People with Disability.
She also stresses that the government has identified about 21 types of disability/ handicaps. She urges the student to give importance to their education and not getting themselves involved in any social evils of the society like Substance Addiction, Teenage Pregnancy and others as this could contribute to many other issues.
Then the Resource Person, Rinibeth Patlong, Program Manager of MCSWA TI- CC highlighted on the types of substances, ill effect of Substances and also the treatment process that one with this issue could access.
Other speakers who were present on this day were Dr. JN Shullai who speaks on the Area of Work and Services of MCSWA. MCSWA as an NGO is also marking its 40th anniversary on June 2022
The Program also included a testimonial speech from an ex-Injecting Drug User (IDU) where he requested the participants to extend their support by stopping discrimination and stigmatisation towards an IDU.
