Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong has expressed hope that the bailey bridge at Dwarksuid along the Shillong bypass will be made operationalise within 15 days.
The construction of the bailey bridge is being taken up jointly by the concessionaire and the broder roads organization (BRO).
Reply to a query raised by Umroi legislator George B Lyngdoh in the Assemby on Thursday, Tynsong said that the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has officially informed the state government that they have already handed over the portion to the BRO for laying of the bailey bridge.
“Yesterday the BRO has already taken over that portion and laying has also started. (Therefore), we do hope by another 15 days time we will be able to make the bridge operationalise,” he informed.
He also said that the expected date of completion is on March 31. According to him, the construction is being borne by the NHAI since the project was handed to them since 2010.
It may be mentioned here that heavy loaded vehicles traversng to Silchar and Tripura via Shillong bypass have been diverted to ply through Shillong at present after the Dwarksuid bridge had developed cracks and was found to be unsafe.
Lyngdoh while expressing concern over the engagement of only few labourers at the construction site requested the state government to ensure there is constant supervision for speedy completion of the bridge.
He also alleged that late night overloading trucks are plying through the old Dwarksuid bridge which is a matter of serious concern.
To this, the deputy chief minister said that the concreting work has been fuly completed and now laying of the bridge has started as he informed that that the chief engineer PWD(national highways) have been asked to monitor the work.
“Even at the level of the chief secretary and additional chief secretary monitoring is being done and they keep on having meetings regularly…,” he added.
