Govt is taking adequate measures: HM
SHILLONG: Home Minister James K Sangma on Thursday said the state government is taking adequate measures to ensure any fallout of the Assam’s National Register of Citizens (NRC) will not affect the state.
“All checks and measures are being taken and we are ever vigilant to ensure that we will not negatively be impacted,” Sangma told reporters here.
He was reacting to the apprehension that the 19 lakh persons who have been excluded from the final list of the NRC in Assam may enter and settle in the state.
The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has also intensified checking in the different districts to prevent illegal immigrants from entering the state.
Other NGOs have also asked the state government to toughen its internal security apparatus in the wake of the publication of the NRC final list in Assam.
When asked, the home minister said, “I assure the people of the state that we are taking adequate measures to ensure that any fallout of the NRC will not affect our state.”
He said that the chief minister Conrad K Sangma will soon take up with his counterpart in Assam on the matter related to the concern over the exclusion of tribal women from Meghalaya from the list.
