Govt not to allow plying of overloaded trucks over Bailey bridge

The state government has directed the police and transport departments not to allow overloaded trucks to ply over the Bailey bridge at Dwar Ksuid along the Shillong bypass.  

Informing this on Tuesday, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong told reporters that the state government had received information yesterday from the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and BRO that on one side of the ramp, the approach to the Bailey bridge was broken.

Stating that swift action was taken by the NHAI and BRO to repair the ramp, Tynsong said, “I am happy to inform you that traffic has just resumed this afternoon as they have already completed the repairing work.”

He further asserted the need to make sure that the carrying capacity should not cross 40 metric tonnes otherwise the bridge will not last.

Tynsong had inaugurated the Bailey bridge on March 25.

Asked, the deputy chief minister said a full time police team has been deployed on both sides of the bridge for manning and regulating the movement of trucks.

“We have already instructed police personnel posted there that they should make sure that trucks carrying within 40 metric tonnes should be allowed to ply over that bridge,” he said.

Tynsong further informed that the police and transport department are coordinating to ensure strict regulation as he added, “weighment is important until the time we are able to construct a new bridge.”
