Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday announced the state government’s decision to scrap the Shillong Medical College project.
“The government has decided to scrap (the project) and move forward,” Sangma told reporters after celebrating four years of MDA government.
When asked the reason, the chief minister said the company which the agreement was signed with did not start the work for the past many years.
It may be mentioned here that the foundation stone for the construction of the medical college was earlier laid at the premises of the Reid Chest TB hospital in the city. It was also decided to shift the TB hospital to its new building at Umsawli to pave way for the project.
The state government had inked an MoU with the KPC group for setting up a 500-bedded hospital-cum-medical college in the state’s capital at an estimated cost of over Rs 300 crore.
The Chief Minister also expressed hope that the government will be able to move faster with (a new) proposal for the Shillong Medical College.
He, however, said the Tura Medical College is on the right track.
