Govt seeks report from DCs on requirement of additional forces for peaceful conduct of ADC polls in Khasi Jaintia region
Deputy Chief Minister in-charge District Council Affairs (DCA) and Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong on Friday said the deputy commissioners of the respective districts in both Khasi and Jaintia Hills region have been asked to assess and submit a report on the requirement of additional forces for the conduct of a free, fair and peaceful elections to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC), slated to be held on February 21.
“We have entrusted the deputy commissioners of the respective districts to look into the matter because the state government is ready to provide additional forces for ensuring the peaceful conduct of the ADC polls,” Tynsong told reporters.
The deputy CM also announced that the model code of conduct (MCC) will come into immediate force from January 27, in all districts under the two ADCs of Khasi and Jaintia region.
He informed that the final publication of the electoral roll will be on January 27 adding that the filing of nomination will be from January 28 to February 3 at 3pm and this will be followed by scrutiny of nomination. The last date of withdrawing the nomination paper will be on February 4.
Date of finalization of valid nominations and allotment of symbols will be on February 6, as per AD rules. The date of polling will be on February 21 and counting will be on February 24.
Asked, Tynsong said that the expenditure ceiling for each candidate has been fixed at Rs 5 lakh.
On the expenditure for holding the two ADC elections, he said, “I can only tell this when the respective deputy commissioners have submitted their assessments and estimates.”
