Govt should utilize police force to protect borders: Shullai
Newly inducted cabinet minister and BJP legislator from South Shillong Sanbor Shullai on Friday said it is high time that Meghalaya should utilize its police force to protect the inter-state borders.
Speaking to media persons after taking charge of office, Shullai said police along with the people of Mizoram have proved that they love and they are together to protect their identity.
“…this spirit should be with us, the public and the police if the people of Assam keep on harassing our people in the border area. Time has come not only to talk and take tea…we have to react, we have to act at the spot only,” he asserted.
Stating that he is not supporting violence, Shullai however said “This is an example that we should have the spirit to protect our people we have to utilize our force – the police should go in the front to talk with the Assam police.”
“Like what we have seen from time to time the police are behind, the civilians are in the front. The higher ups should give orders that police should be in the front to protect and that they should not cross the line of control,” he said.
Asked, Shullai maintained by saying – “If the enemies come to your house attack you and your wife and children, you also have to attack in self defense, the same thing it should be done in our borders…if your enemy comes to your house to steal or rob your house, you have to protect yourself, whether it is legal or illegal, you have to protect.”
Asserting the importance for the two states to maintain status quo in areas of difference, Shullai said the issue has been pending and needs to be resolved at the earliest.
“You will see many political parties have given public commitment in their own manifestos that if they come to power they will solve – but it’s almost more than 50 years, no party can solve it till now. So we have to postmortem what is the problem here,” he said while assuring to work together with the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and MDA government to protect the interest of the state at all cost.
