Govt still pursuing with Centre for separate IAS cadre for Meghalaya

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday said the state government is still pursuing with the Centre for creation of a separate Indian Administrative Service (IAS) cadre for Meghalaya.

Replying to a supplementary query raised by Congress MLA from East Shillong Ampareen Lyngdoh in the Assembly, Sangma informed that he had written a letter to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 22, 2019 urging him to consider a separate IAS cadre for Meghalaya. 

“After the North East Reorganization Amendment Act, 2012 divided the Manipur-Tripura cadre, we have been really pushing for this since then and we are still pursuing this matter,” he said. 

Asserting the importance of having a separate cadre, the chief minister said, “If this happens, we will be able to see that we have more cadre strength than what we have right now. 

Meghalaya is facing a huge deficit of IAS officers. There are only 41 IAS officers – 23 are direct recruits and 18 promoted – of the total strength of 77. 

At present, five are on central deputation.
