Govt to first rehabilitate 600 registered hawkers: Dhar
Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Urban Affairs Sniawbhalang Dhar on Thursday assured a delegation of hawkers that the government will try to locate a good place for them to carry out their hawking business.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Dhar said that the delegation has requested him to provide them a good space for hawking.
“I told them (delegation) don’t worry I am with you. Please cooperate with the government, we will try to locate a good place for them. So be patient and be with the government. Yes you may not get exactly what you want, we also may not get exactly what we want but I think we will be able to get a good place. I request them to cooperate with the government and they are very happy,” he stated.
“Frankly speaking they are our brothers and sisters. We can’t throw them just like that. We will take a united decision along with them. In the meantime, we are identifying a few more places, so we will decide in a joint meeting with my officers and them,” Dhar added.
He informed that the government will first rehabilitate the over 600 registered hawkers.
According to him, there has been no instance of hawkers rejecting the 3-4 places identified as hawking zones.
Asked, the deputy chief minister said, “It doesn’t mean that the government is soft and they are rough. Not like that. Yes, if somebody comes and sits along the road and the footpath that is why we have to regulate in a proper manner so that there is no disturbance for the people who walk in the footpaths or crowded areas.”
