Govt to take a call on educational institutions after May 3
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Tuesday said the government would soon take a call on whether to reopen the educational institutions in the state.
“Very soon we will think of a policy as to what can be done in this regard as we cannot continue closing down the educational institutions in this manner,” Tynsong told reporters after a review meeting.
The state government had earlier decided that there be no relaxation of the lockdown in East Khasi Hills, which has been categorized as the “red zone” since all COVID-19 cases have been recorded in the district.
Tynsong however said the ten other districts, which recorded zero cases so far, falls under the “green zones” category.
“Therefore, the education department is still working out (the modalities) and we will see (what to do) after May 3,” he added.
It may be mentioned here that all educational institutions across the state have remained shut for the past one month following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
With regards to online classes, the deputy CM however said that the initiative is not that effective for students in rural areas due to poor network connectivity.
On demand to waive school and college fees during the period of the lockdown, Tynsong said since there are many non-government schools, the education department is in the process of consulting with the different school managing committees (SMCs) before taking a call on the matter.
