GP Singh in central deputation; Harmeet Singh takes over as Assam’s in-charge DGP
Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh has been appointed as the Director General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), paving the way for Harmeet Singh, a senior IPS officer, to take over as the in-charge DGP of Assam Police.
GP Singh, a 1991-batch IPS officer, assumed charge as Assam DGP on January 31, 2023, following the retirement of Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta. His central deputation will extend until his superannuation on November 30, 2027. The Home (A) Department formally relieved him from his duties in Assam through an order issued on Tuesday.

An official note from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), vide No. 35/42023-EO(SM-1) dated August 7, confirmed his empanelment for Director General (DG) or equivalent-level positions at the Centre.
Until a full-time DGP is appointed, Harmeet Singh, a 1992-batch IPS officer, will serve as the in-charge DGP of Assam, while continuing to hold multiple key positions, including Director General of Home Guards and Commandant General of Civil Defence, Special DGP (Headquarters), Special DGP & Director, Fire and Emergency Services and Special DGP (Border).
GP Singh is expected to formally hand over the charge to Harmeet Singh on January 29.
