Guv approves Kharkongor-led EC in KHADC
SHILLONG: Governor Tathagata Roy has approved the formation of the United Democratic Forum (UDF)-led executive committee in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council after Independent MDC from Nongthymmai Latiplang Kharkongor was recently elected as the new Chief Executive Member (CEM)
Kharkongor is all set to soon submit the list of executive members for approval by the Governor.
“…the Governor has approved the election of Latiplang Kharkongor as the new CEM of the KHADC,” Deputy Secretary to the Governor, A Lakiang in a letter to the deputy commissioner of East Khasi Hills Matsiewdor W Nongbri here on Monday.
The UDF-led EC supported by the Congress was formed after the collapsed of the United Democratic Party (UDP)-led United Democratic Alliance (UDA) executive committee when it lost the confidence of the House in the just concluded winter session.
The Governor has also rejected the state government’s recommendation for imposition of Administrator’s rule to avoid instability in the functioning of the KHADC as it cited that the House has ended in a tie 14-14 after the NC was put to vote.
Speaking to reporters here, the newly elected KHADC chief said that he would soon convene a meeting of the UDF to collectively decide on the names of the EMs to be submitted for the approval of the governor.
Asked if the deputy CEM’s post will go to the Congress, Kharkongor said that will also be decided in the meeting.
On the other hand, the CEM said that the governor had rejected the recommendation for bringing Administrator’s rule in the KHADC as per rule.
“The UDA members had decided to participate in the election of the CEM but later withdrew from the contest so imposition of the AR does not arise. Whatever that has been done was as per procedures,” he added.
