HANM to stage protest on boundary dispute
SHILLONG: The Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM) has decided to stage a sit-in-demonstration on February 20, to protest against the delay in resolving the boundary dispute with Assam.
Addressing media persons here on Monday, HANM President Lamphrang Kharbani said, “The sit-in-demonstration will mark the start of our agitations to pressurise the state government to speed up in resolving the inter-state border dispute with Assam.”
He also recalled that before the Assembly polls, the leader of the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) Prestone Tynsong, who is now the Deputy Chief Minister, had assured that the party if elected to power would find out ways and means to address the issue.
“Now that they (NPP) are ruling in the state, they have to fulfil what was promised before the people of the state. They should understand the problems faced by the people residing at the border,” Kharbani said.
According to him, it would be meaningless for the state government to talk about development when it cannot protect its land from illegal encroachment.
The HANM president further said that the organisation would be compelled to take stern action if the state government continues to be adamant.
Asked, Kharbani said if required, the organisation would also meet the Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal for his intervention into the matter.
“We would also seek the intervention of the Centre,” he said while expressing full support to the recent petition filed by the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) on the matter.
Meanwhile, he said the protest, to be held at the parking lot near the Additional Secretariat, will be participated by members of the organisation from across the state.
