Heroin worth Rs 6 crore seized from Amingaon, 2 arrested
In its ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking, the Special Task Force (STF) of Assam Police seized 637 grams of heroin, valued at approximately Rs 6 crore, from a Tata Nexon vehicle at Amingaon in Lower Assam’s Kamrup district on Sunday.
The STF arrested two individuals in connection with the case: Murtaza Ahmed, also known as Bhulu, aged 31, from Latasil in Guwahati, and Prasant Toppo, 27, son of Fidilius Toppo from Dokmoka in West Karbi Anglong.
The STF team, acting on prior intelligence about the movement of narcotics from Kangpokpi district in Manipur to Lower Assam districts, intercepted the vehicle and discovered 49 soap boxes/packets of heroin. The consignment weighed 637 grams, excluding packaging, with an estimated market value of around Rs 6 crore.
The heroin was transported from Manipur to Guwahati in a truck before being handed over to Murtaza Ahmed, also known as Bhulu, who was tasked with distributing it to Baihata and Rangia areas.
Acting on specific intelligence, the STF intercepted Bhulu at Amingaon in a Tata Nexon vehicle, where they recovered 49 soap boxes/packets of heroin. Following this, the truck driver, Prasant Toppo, was apprehended from a parking area in Changsari.
Both the Tata Nexon and the truck, along with the narcotics, have been seized by the authorities.
Despite increased enforcement efforts by the police and other agencies, drug trafficking continues to be a significant issue in Assam. The state has seen a persistent flow of narcotics, with heroin, in particular, being trafficked from regions like Manipur. This problem has deeply impacted the younger generation, with many falling victim to addiction.
The rise in drug-related activities has raised concerns among both authorities and the public, as the youth’s involvement not only endangers their health and future but also fuels a larger social crisis.
