The Division Bench of the High Court of Meghalaya has directed the Meghalaya Government to make additional efforts in keeping Jowai Town clean for the Behdienkhlam Festival.
The order was passed during the hearing of PIL No. 6 of 2022 Dated 5.7.2023 with
MC(PIL) No. 2 of 2022 in matter of Synjuk Ki Waheh Shnong Jowai vs State of Meghalaya & ors Jowai Municipal Board Jowai & anr vs State of Meghalaya & ors.
During the hearing, the Court viewed that Affidavits have been filed by both the petitioner and the Municipality indicating some system having been put in place for the collection of waste in Jowai.
The Court said it is hoped that the residents’ grievance of trucks not visiting certain localities or not being available at the appointed hours would have been taken care of.
“Further, in view of the Behdeinkhlam festival later this week both the Municipality and the State administration have to make greater effort to keep Jowai clean and additional trucks may be assigned for the next week or so to ensure that the waste does not overflow on the streets or in the residences during such time,” said the Court order passed on Wednesday.
