Himanta Biswa Sarma celebrates birthday with children of safai karmis
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma celebrated his birthday in a unique and heartfelt manner, spending time with around 1,200 children of Safai Karmis at a special event titled ‘Alokere Jatra’ at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra on Saturday.
The children from Valmiki Sangeet Vidyalaya performed cultural presentations showcasing Assam’s rich heritage, including Borgeet and other traditional art forms, in honour of the Chief Minister. Sarma lauded their performances, stating, “You have beautifully depicted Assam’s cultural diversity and heritage through your presentation.”
Sarma took the occasion to pay tribute to Srimanta Sankardeva, recognizing his contributions to removing social discrimination and fostering equality. He praised the efforts of Valmiki Sangeet Vidyalaya in preserving these ideals and expressed his appreciation for the outstanding talent displayed by the children.
Encouraging the students to strive for excellence, Sarma announced that in two years, the children of Valmiki Sangeet Vidyalaya would be taken to New Delhi to perform in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He urged them to pursue both academics and cultural activities with dedication, emphasizing that Assam’s increasing number of medical, engineering, and higher education institutions will provide them with ample opportunities for success.

As a special birthday gesture, Sarma announced an educational tour to Kaziranga National Park for all students of Valmiki Sangeet Vidyalaya. The students will be taken in batches to experience the park’s rich biodiversity and gain educational insights. Additionally, Sarma encouraged them to write essays about their experience, with the best entries set to receive awards.
The event was attended by Minister Pijush Hazarika, RSS Assam Kshetra Pracharak Basistha Bujar Baruah, and several other dignitaries, making it a memorable occasion for the children.
Through Alokere Jatra, Sarma turned his birthday into a celebration of inclusivity, culture, and education, leaving an inspiring message for the children to dream big and work hard for a brighter future.
