Historic milestone: Mehtab Sangma becomes second in Meghalaya’s husband-wife legislator duo
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma’s wife and National People Party (NPP) National Treasurer Dr. Mehtab Chandee Agitok Sangma won the bye election from Gambegre Assembly Constituency as she defeated her nearest rival Sadhiarani M Sangma of the Trinamool Congress party by a huge margin of 4594 votes.
The Chief Minister and his wife will be the second husband-wife duo to be legislator in the same term while the first duo was Dr Mukul Sangma and his wife D Shira.
The bye election to Gambegre Assembly Constituency was held on November 13 where the total turnout of voters was 30,115.
The seat was vacated by Saleng Sangma of the Congress party after he won the Lok Sabha election from 2-Tura Parliamentary Constituency held on April 19 this year and the result was declared on June 4 this year.
Mehtab Chandee Agitok Sangma of the National People’s Party (NPP secured 42.1% of the total votes of 12,678 votes while her nearest rival Sadhiarani M. Sangma of the All India Trinamool Congress obtained 8,084 votes (26.84%).
Jingjang M. Marak of the Indian National Congress, bagged 7,695 votes (25.55%) while Bernard N. Marak of the Bharatiya Janata Party managed 710 votes (2.36%). Two independent candidates namely Jerry A. Sangma and Sengkrabirth M. Marak trailed behind along with 95 NOTA votes.
Meanwhile, Conrad K Sangma is his Facebook page said, “History has been made in Gambegre!

He went on to say, “Together, we will work towards making Gambegre a beacon of hope and opportunity. This is not just a win for our family, but for every single person who dreams of a stronger, better Meghalaya.”
“Here’s to a new chapter of service and commitment. Gambegre, the future is ours to build together!” he added.
