HITO seeks action against Assam Govt’s move to set up university at Khanduli village

The Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organization (HITO) has demanded the state government to stop the alleged move to construct a building for setting up of a university by the Assam government in West Jaintia Hills District.

In a memorandum to the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday, HITO secretary Wanbun Dkhar said, “We urge the government of Meghalaya through you to act on the matter at the earliest to avoid any (untowards) incident…”

He alleged that on May 31, a group of people from Assam under the instruction of the chief executive member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, Tuliram Ronghang conducted an inspection of a land at Lum Saitmuid under Khanduli village in West Jaintia Hills for the purpose of setting up the university.

According to him, the inspection was conducted without the knowledge of the Meghalaya government and its district administration of West Jaintia Hills.

Dkhar however said it is a fact that the land where Assam proposed to set up the university belongs to Meghalaya and is under the jurisdiction of the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council.

He added that the JHADC in recent years had just auctioned the pine trees grown at the particular area which was planted and maintained by the council itself.

The HITO leader said it is high time for the state government to raise its voice against the illegal encroachment by the Assam government.
