HNLC threatens to disrupt national games, ask police not to provoke
SHILLONG: The Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) has accused the state police of collecting revenue through illegal supply of coal and cattle smuggling in the state even as it threatened to disrupt the upcoming national games to be held in the state in 2022.
“…the HNLC seriously advices the Police Dept to refrain from passing false information about our organisation’s financial condition.Rather, it will serve them good to look at their own shady revenue collection which is done through illegal supply of coal and cattle smuggling in the entire state,” HNLC general secretary cum publicity secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw said in a statement issued on Friday.
His statement came after the state police had termed that the recent surrender of the outfit’s finance secretary Wankupar Marwein was a major blow to the finance wing of the HNLC.
Assistant inspector general of police (A), GK Iangrai had said that the HNLC is desperately trying to revive its strength and power in the state where several attempts were made to lure vulnerable sections of youth in the state to join its fold.
According to Iangrai, the HNLC is confine to issuing random press releases and its attempt to strengthen the organization, raising funds through extortion, attempting fresh recruitment of cadres through social media and sensationalizing their presence and strength by using IEDs etc., could so far been thwarted effectively by State police.
Nongtraw however said that the police should be aware that the entire state is facing a financial crisis.
“That is the reason why the police is earning their private revenue through the illegal supply of coal and cattle smuggling. Every police station, every officer in charge and every district SP has their own share of percentage either in cattle smuggling or illegal supply of coal. The police should look at their own illegal extortion rather than pointing fingers at us,” he said.
Stating that the lawmakers are the ultimate lawbreakers, the outfit leader said this has been proved by the recent CBI enquiry regarding the coal scam.
“Everyone knows who are the real culprits of this massive coal extortion racket. We have obtained several video clips whereby police officials are extorting money from truck drivers,” he claimed.
Asking the police to stop provoking the outfit by making negative statements, Nongtraw warned by saying, “…else we would be compelled to dirupt the upcoming national games event. It’s an open secret that events of such a magnitude besides its splendour is more a money spinning event for some political manipulators and few individuals.”
