HSPDP extends full support to UDP candidate Eugeneson Lyngdoh
Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) on Tuesday decided to extend its full support to the United Democratic Party (UDP) candidate Eugeneson Lyngdoh in the upcoming bye election to Mawphlang Assembly seat on October 30.
“We have taken a final call to support the UDP candidate from Mawphlang constituency,” HSPDP president KP Pangniang told reporters after chairing a meeting of the party.
The HSPDP is a partner of the Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA) led by the UDP.
Pangiang said the party will also request the UDP to immediately call a meeting of the RDA to formulate and take some important steps before moving to the election campaigns.
The HSPDP president however said that party has not field candidates and has nothing to say about the two other constituencies – Mawryngkneng and Rajabala, which are also going for bypolls.
When asked, Pangniang denied that the HSPDP is surrendering by not fielding candidates for the bypolls and said, “Yes, the HSPDP is the oldest party no doubt, but we are not keen to field candidates as we want the two regional parties under the RDA should work together and support each other – this is what we want to show the people that we are working together.”
He said the alliance between the two regional parties will continue as both are preparing to face the 2023 Assembly polls.
“In fact we have also approached the People’s Democratic Front (PDF) for joining the RDA and working together if not unification of the regional forces right now,” he added.
