HYC demand Governor’s resignation
SHILLONG: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has demanded the resignation of the Governor, Tathagata Roy after he made a pro-Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) statement during his Kolkata visit.
“He (Roy) no longer has the moral right to continue as governor. We urge him to immediately resign as governor of Meghalaya and to instead joina back to the BJP,” president of the HYC Robertjune Kharjahrin said in a statement issued here on Sunday.
The governor had expressed full support to the Centre’s move to implement the CAB, which seeks to provide citizenship to migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
His statement also came at a time when the state government and various stakeholders are opposing the proposed legislation.
“The governor as per the Constitution (supposed) act under the advice of the council of ministers. The Meghalaya government is opposing CAB so how can he (Roy) take an opposite view to that of the state government’s view,” Kharjahrin said.
“The indigenous people of the state are also opposing the Bill but the governor is taking side with the illegal immigrants from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh by supporting the CAB so wht right do he have to remain as the governor,” he added.
Kharjahrin also said that if he want to give his personal opinion nobody can stop him but let him resign first as the governor.
Meanwhile, the HYC and the Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organization (CoMSO) will also hold protest tomorrow to demand scrapping of the CAB, 2019
