HYC demands MDA govt to close chapter of uranium mining through official resolution
The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has demanded the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government to pass an official resolution in the Assembly urging the Government of India to close down any proposal to mine uranium in the state.
“We urged upon the state government to take necessary steps to pass the resolution in this regard in the next session of the Assembly,” HYC president Robertjune Kharjahrin said in a letter to the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma.
He said the HYC vehemently opposed any steps or act of the Government of India to mine uranium deposits in the state.
Although time and again the people of the state have shown strong protest against the proposed mining of uranium, yet the Government of India is still contemplating to established mining centre and exploratory mining of uranium in the state as can be seen in the reply of the Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions and Prime Minister’s Office Dr Jitendra Singh, to the unstarred question no.1777 dated July 27, in Lok Sabha, Kharjahrin said.
He said since the state legislative assembly represents the voice of the people of the state through the elected representatives, it would be prudent and forceful that the Assembly pass an official resolution in this regard and to impress upon the union government to stop any attempt or to do any act on its part to mine uranium in the state of Meghalaya and to officially close down any program or proposal in this matter in the future.
