HYC oppose govt’s move to construct shopping mall at Barik point

The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) Shillong City has demanded the state government to erect statues of the legendary freedom fighters of the state instead of the proposed construction of a shopping mall at Barik point.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, HYC-Shillong City president John Lyngdoh said that the government may also consider dedicating the land at Barik point, where the PWD office is presently located, as a place for holding of public meetings or public protest.

He said the proposal to construct a shopping mall at Barik point would only aggravate the problem of traffic congestion in the city.

“Therefore, we demand the government to instead erect the statues of all freedom fighters of the state and dedicate the land as a place for holding public meetings and protests,” he said.
