HYC pushes for local contractors in Rs 1600 crore New Shillong Water Supply Scheme
The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) on Friday demanded the state government to allot contract works to local contractors for the New Shillong Water Supply Scheme and other state sponsored projects.
In a letter to the PHE Minister Marcuise N Marak, HYC president Roykupar Synrem said, “…we demand that the Department should formulate such norms and conditions to ensure that all the works for the said Scheme are allotted to the local qualified Contractors of the State.”
“We also urged the Department that here forward all the works/schemes which are fully State sponsored should be allotted to the local qualified Contractors by framing norms suitable for them to take part in the tendering process,” he added.
Synrem said that the state government has initiated the biggest ever State Funded project of New Shillong Water Supply Scheme at a cost of Rs 1600 Crores, which is one of the largest projects undertaken in the history of the State.

“We are confident that the project, once completed, will be able to cater to the needs and requirement of Shillong and New Shillong Township for generations to come. We are aware that the New Shillong Water Supply Scheme is a fully State Sponsored Scheme, hence the Department concern has full liberty to frame norms with regard to allotment of works for the said Scheme. The Council is fully aware that there are local contractors from the State who are competent to undertake various works under the Scheme/Project as per their capacities,” he stated.
