HYC urged MHRC to penalize Assam Police for lathi charged of Umwali villagers
SHILLONG: Condemning the Assam police for lathi charging innocent villagers of Umwali, the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) Central Executive Council has urged the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) to penalize the Assam police for gross violation of human rights.
In a letter to the Chairman of the MHRC, the HYC said that as per media report yesterday at around 12.00 to 1.00 PM, the Assam Police illegally entered Umwali village, West Khasi Hills District, Meghalaya and lathi charge the villagers without any rhyme and reason, who volunteered for installation of electric post in the said village.
They also informed that during the incident the Assam Police has also illegally arrested Secretary Shnong of Umwali Lestar Thongni and the driver of the MeECL.
The letter read that 28 villagers were injured and were immediately rushed to Nonglang PHC and 16 of them who were seriously injured were referred to Civil Hospital Nongstoin for further treatment.
The HYC urged the MHRC to provide compensation to the injured person and to direct the Assam police to immediately release the arrested persons unconditionally besides directing the State Government to provide immediate protection to the villagers
