IIM Shillong successfully concludes the 2nd International Conference on Economics and Public Policy
IIM Shillong successfully concluded the 2nd International Conference on Economics and Public Policy (ICEP-II), attracting around 55 distinguished participants from across India. This year’s conference, themed “Emerging Frontiers in Inclusive Growth and Development,” fostered a dynamic exchange of ideas. The Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand, partnered as the Knowledge Partner, with support from North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO).
ICEP-II received 119 distinct research papers, of which 44 were selected for presentation across ten thematic tracks, including Health and Education, Sustainable Development, Climate Finance, and Gender and Cultural Diversity. This diversity of thought underscored the conference’s role as a platform for innovative inquiry into key economic challenges.
The conference began with an address from the distinguished Chief Guest, Dr. Abhiroop Mukhopadhyay, Professor at the Indian Statistical Institute, Delhi. His keynote, titled “Human Capital in India: Lenses Old and New,” set the tone for discussions, emphasizing the intersections of education, health, and labour reforms in India’s economic landscape.
On the first day, six technical sessions were held, featuring 28 presentations on critical topics. The day concluded with a thought-provoking session led by Dr. Christine Farias and Dr. Gerard Farias from the University of New York, who explored the compatibility of growth and development in the context of ecological concerns.
The second day continued with a keynote address by Dr. Syed Shurid Khan of the Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand, who emphasized the importance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles in corporate strategies for fostering sustainable and inclusive growth across Southeast Asia. Esteemed delegates further enriched the dialogue through virtual participation.
The Best Paper Awards at ICEP-II were presented to Ajay Sharma from IIM Indore for his paper titled “Commuting, Spatial Flexibility and Urban Wage Premium: Evidence from India,” Prateek Sharma from IIM Udaipur for “Parental Migration and Intergenerational Educational Transmission,” and Kirti Gupta from the Reserve Bank of India for “Fuelling Electric Vehicles Growth: Factors that Matter in India’s Electric Vehicle Growth Story.”
As ICEP-II concluded, heartfelt gratitude was extended to all participants and contributors for their invaluable insights and collaboration, which not only advanced individual research but also laid the groundwork for future discourse in economics and public policy.
