IMD celebrates 150: Meteorological Center Shillong holds open house exhibition
As part of the occasion of 150th anniversary celebration of India Meteorological Department, the Meteorological Center Shillong office held the open house exhibition, observatory visit on January 15, 2025.
At the exhibition, the Meteorological Center Shillong displayed instruments that would make one recall similar pictures in their school Geography books.
The instruments include the GPS Radiosonde which is an instrument used for measuring the atmospheric parameters and transmits the information to ground stations to collect data and used for forecast. Radiosondes carry sensors that measure temperature, air pressure, humidity and GPS location. These are carried by weather balloons.
There was also a dispay of the Automatic Weather Station (AWS) – tipping bucket rain gauge, data logger, temperature and humidity sensor, wind sensor, pressure sensor.
The surface observation instruments include a green cylindrical item which is the ordinary rain gauge, other equipment is the anemometer, sunshine cards, open pan evaporimeter (OPE) measuring bucket, water thermometer, measuring glass, hair hydrograph, thermometers on display were the minimum thermometers, maximum thermometers, wet bulb thermometer, dry bulb thermometer.
An official gave a tour of the observatory where the necessary instruments such as evaporimeter, ordinary rain gauge, a single Stevenson screen, a self recording rain gauge.
